So They're making 'Scream 4'

Posted by DJBone1031 Nov. 26, 2009 @ 4:51 AM EST

...You know it's right that you bow your head in shame if you enjoy the Twilight series, but I would be hypocritical if I did not, simultaneously, admit my own profound guilt at enjoying Wes Craven's 'Scream' series. The tag line for the original Scream posters was, "Someone has taken their love of scary movies too far." I can only say that I took my love of "Scream" way further than any normal person should have, and leave it at that. However, today we learn that the old cast is getting back together. Any of you who have actually seen all three films would probably wonder - Why? Why, after we understand the entire series of Woodsboro murders would we need an additional Scream? To this I can only say - Have you seen any of these people get work lately? No, I mean like work that the general public noticed? Let's tackle this one at a time shall we:

Neve Campbell - She was the successor scream queen of the 90's because Sigourney Weaver refused to do any more Alien movies, and because Jamie Lee Curtis was getting way too old to do any more teenie bopper flicks. The 90's were indeed the era of Sydney Prescott. But all that changed at the turn of the last decade with Scream 3. The new millennium was not kind to Ms. Campbell. We even [finally] saw her boobies in "I Really Hate My Job" in 07' but to no avail - it's like her stock just kept plummeting, and Syndey Prescott collected dust on a lonely Blockbuster shelf.

David Arquette- Who didn't love Dewey? No one. Sheriff Dwight Riley was the man... or the boy, at least. However, other than the fact that he's Patricia Arquette's brother - who the hell knows or cares what he's doing?

Courtney Cox - Can we say Typecasting? This actress has a bigger 'Friends' scar on her forehead than Daniel Radcliffe will in years to come. It won't take much work for Cox to pretend to be the desperate reporter Gale Weathers. She'll be back in character faster than you can sing I'll be there for you!

Wes Craven- Two words that summed up mean slasher. No one does it better than Wes. However, even Wes has been having some downtime. His iconic monster Freddy is about to hit the stage for the umpteenth time, but he honestly hasn't had an ORIGINAL slasher since 'Cursed.' And anyone who has seen 'Cursed' will tell you that Wes really needs to focus more on his scripts.

Nick Cave - three words - Red - Right - Hand. Everyone Looooves Nick Cave right? Yeah, well, not me. I'm as much of a jazz fan as the next guy, but Nick Cave has been boring me to tears since 'Nocturama.' Nick, listen to the little guy on this - if you get a call from Wes Craven, and you want people to notice you again pick a DJ that's NOT from the 'Thirsty Ear' like Oakenfold, BT, Dinsdale, or Richard Grey, and let them remix your song. Don't let anyone cover it. DJ Spooky is an awesome mixer, but the experimental clashes with this sort of genre. However, this was THE song for 'Scream,' and with respect to Nick Cave it was a good solid song. Let's hope this baby comes back too.

Kevin Williamson - Last, but not least, the writer of the Scream series. I have absolutely no qualms with Mr. Williamson - He took the original slasher equation and made it work. God bless you Mr. Williamson. However, could youplease vary that equation a bit morethan the people who are gonna make up the body count? Honest to God, I know the teenage girls love your stuff (and I myself am loathe to admit that I was under your spell as well.) but could you PLEASE make the next story a little different? We don't need another cookie cutter movie. You of all people should know it after 'Cursed.' You can do WAY better. If Sid's the killer, please make it that she's a hero, and that I don't figure that detail out til' way way later.

After writing this I think we may be able to hypothesize something about horror movies: Those that die young are the lucky ones. You may think me nuts to say this, but consider it for a moment - Drew Barrymore, Rose McGowan, Parker Posey, Liev Schreiber, Sarah Michelle Gellar, and even Jamie 'fuckin' Kennedy were in the Scream trilogy. Yet since they're non-involvement in the series they've gone on to make other movies. It's like if you die in a horror movie you get WORK - And I can name more people if you don't believe me - Kevin Bacon was in the first 'Friday The 13th' and Johnny Depp was in 'A Nightmare on Elm St.' So if you like these actors pray that the next Ghostface killers are members of Al Quaida and that they suicide bomb Woodsboro. GOOD LUCK GUYS LET'S SEE WHAT'S IN STORE FOR 2010!!!

Samhain or Sowin?

Posted by DJBone1031 Oct. 30, 2009 @ 3:27 AM EDT

You know I'm pretty informed about Halloween right? So I know all sorts of useless stuff like: Samhain is the Gaelic word for Halloween. But the problem is I've been pronouncing it wrong. In fact I've been pronouncing it wrong for a very very long time. Apparently whoever was teaching Gaelic didn't understand the first rule of American English - We're lazy and we don't care about the difference between how something is written and how it sounds. Anyway, Samhain actually sounds like Solwin. You write it Samhain, but it's pronounced Solwin. Now I've stared at the word Samhain for some time. I've even read a little bit about Gaelic grammar, but nothing explains why it's pronounced Solwin. I don't even think the Gaelic translator knew what he was doing, I think he was just drunk like every other Irishman, and then made up the grammar after to cover for his mistake.

Trick 'R Treat: A Review

Posted by DJBone1031 Oct. 25, 2009 @ 4:20 AM EDT

So I just finished my 2nd Horror Movie Marathon - I spent about 7 hours decorating and cleaning my house, and then another 7 hours playing horror movies for my guests. I'm beat to a pulp. I haven't slept well in the last three days trying to pull this off, and I'll spend another 7 hours trying to clean tomorrow. Why am I still up? Answer: Mike Dougherty. Who's that? He's the writer and director of Trick 'R Treat. What's Trick 'R Treat? Trick 'R Treat is probably the funnest horror movie I've seen in a long long time. Everyone who matters in the horror field has said this is the best horror movie in 30 years. I showed it as the last movie in a long line of other horror movies. EVERYONE LOVED IT. I showed it to the people who normally hate every horror movie I pick and even they loved it. First let's start with the fact that there's a decent cast - Brian Cox, Dylan Baker, Anna Paquin. Second - The movie effects and splatter versus story and plot is EXTREMELY well balanced. By that I mean that you're not going to be shown pointless stabbings or random mutilation. Nor will you be bored with endless stalker scenes. There's actually a storyline with twists that play on the modern audience. Also, the movie is short. It's only 80 minutes (versus a normal 110 minute movie.). So any of you ADHD people out there who need a movie to go really fast should enjoy this. Overall the movie captures the spirit of Halloween - We see trick or treating, and we see how modern society looks at the holiday. If you need to pick ONE movie for Halloween - This is it. - Bone

THE ESSENTIAL NOX ARCANA

Posted by DJBone1031 Oct. 9, 2009 @ 1:07 PM EDT

Hi Guys,

This isn't part of my 'Haunted iPod' series. The reason being that it's a specific artist we're looking at here and the 'Haunted iPod' is really meant to be a series of mixes. That doesn't mean it can't be used for a Halloween party (cause that would contradict everything I've indicated previously.). Anyhoo the list is as follows.

Shadow Forest ++++++++ Grimm Tales
Crone's Caverns +++++++ Grimm Tales
Black Spires ++++++++++ Grimm Tales
Night Wraiths +++++++++ Grimm Tales

5 BEST Games for Halloween

Posted by DJBone1031 Oct. 9, 2009 @ 6:56 AM EDT

I was thinking of doing a top ten, but who the hell really needs to play TEN video games? I mean seriously, I've been on Newgrounds for a while now, and some people here don't have the attention span to read a list of ten games, let alone to actually play all ten. So we're gonna try five.

1. The Simpsons: Zombie Shooter
Armed with a shotgun you mercilessly destroy an army of zombies including Flanders, George Washington, and Shakespeare! You reload by shooting the evil Krusty doll hiding behind a tree.

http://www.killthezombies.com/online-z ombie-games/play/the-simpsons-zombie-s hooter/

2. Horror Icons Memory Game
A simple matching video game with famous horror icons like Ghost Face, Norman Bates, and Jigsaw. Every time you match up an icon you hear a snip of their movie theme.

3. The Last Stand 2
It has a gritty 'Dawn-of-the-Dead' like atmosphere. Here, much like it's older brother 'The Last Stand,' you build a barricade, look for weapons and survivors, and guard it during the night: fighting off hundreds of zombies. AWESOME game and in this version you move from town to town trying to get yourself to eventual safety.

4. Trick or Treat Beat!
After more than 3 years it's STILL one of my all time favorite Halloween games. You play a trick-or-treater
using costumes to overcome obstacles like Dracula turns into a bat and flies, the Skeleton can unlock gates, and Frankenstein bashes big rocks. It's one of the few flash games not on Newgrounds (which is a shame because it's one of the best flash games I've ever played.)

5.Trick or Treat Adventure!
Okay, okay - I LOVE Trick or Treat Beat the most, but Trick or Treat Adventure is the BEST GAME. Rendered in an old school 16 bit style with 'Maniac Mansion' controls you have the daunting task of helping Little Johnny: finding a costume, making the costume, and then you still have to take him trick or treating. Guys, it's a full game. And it's no joke either, because I had to use a walkthrough halfway through to solve one part. If you want a great game for Halloween just skip the list and click the link below.

The Haunted iPod (Part 2) Vampire Themed Music

Posted by DJBone1031 Sep. 2, 2009 @ 7:43 AM EDT

Hello People,

Well I had half of a 2 CD Vampire List up for about 2 weeks or so, but the truth is I think it was way too long, and anyone who isn't into goth music probably just needs one CD anyway. So here's my condensed version of the list. You can find Dracula (Psywoofers Mix) on my favorites, and you can also pick up Nox Arcana's 'Lair of the Vampire' mp3 sample on their site: http://www.noxarcana.com/transylvania.
html
Just for the record: Anytime people need Halloween themed music in general I always recommend Nox Arcana. You can pick up ANY of their albums and they work beautifully at spooky party. If you're not crazy about having CD packaging you can grab the stuff on iTunes, but if you want something with cool artwork you should just buy the CD on the website. Now with this list I timed it so it fits on an 80 min CD. Black No. 1 (Little Miss Scare - All) is the abridged version to the original (which is 3 minutes as opposed to 11.) and I use the Website sample of Lair of the Vampire by Nox Arcana (also for it's brevity.).

DJ BONE'S CONDENSED VAMPIRE CD
Song - Artist
Aphex Twin - Violin Solo
Bats in the Belfry - Nox Arcana
Gothic Sanctum - Nox Arcana
Lacrymosa - Evanescence
Out Come the Vampires - Elliott The Letter Ostrich
Dream Window - Brad Fidel
Once Bitten - 3 Speed
Gossamer Mist - Nox Arcana
Transylvanian Concubine - Rasputina
Black No. 1 (Little Miss Scare - All) - Type O Negative
Come to Me - Deborah Holland
Castle of Chaythe - Marco D'Ambrosio
Cry Little Sister - G Tom Mac
The Dead Of Night - Depeche Mode
DracuIa (PsyWoofers Mix) - Philip Glass
Howls - SFX
Night of the Wolf - Nox Aracana
This Blood - Black Lab
Dig Up Her Bones - The Misfits
Lair of the Vampire - Nox Arcana
Vlad the Impaler - Notre Dame
Cry Little Sister (2008 Cave Club Mix) - G Tom Mac
Bloody Tears - QUASAR

ROB ZOMBIE'S HALLOWEEN SERIES: A REVIEW

Posted by DJBone1031 Sep. 1, 2009 @ 10:48 PM EDT

To his credit - Rob Zombie has put out eight albums over the course of two decades - two of which are remixed material. (Not bad for a guy who can't pull off a live act.) Further, I myself was once an avid Zombie fan. However, over time my iPod needed more space, and so, only Hellbilly Deluxe remains in my permanent collection. It contains one of my all time favorite songs - 'Super Beast.' But that's where my love of Zombie ends...somewhere back in 1998. And as I type that, it amazes me. Think about it - It's been eleven years! Eleven years that this artist has continued producing things that no one seems to want, or care about. Of course there's a list of rockers we could complain about who have been making crap much longer than Rob: *Cough* Metallica *Cough*; *Cough* Ozzy *Cough*. However, the reason I'm aiming my pisser at Rob today is that Rob has dared to cross into the movie genre. The way I believe Rob Zombie arrived at his career switch was while watching Michael Jordan play baseball. He probably stared in amazement at Jordan swinging aimlessly at bat, and thought, "Wow that could be me!" Boy was he right! First, Rob Zombie went and made House of 1000 Corpses: No one cared. Then, he made The Devil's Rejects: No one liked that either. At that point I was getting kind of angry because Zombie is known to be an educated horror fan, and one would figure that after years of watching lots of horror that you could, in theory, create a decent horror movie from the experience. But apparently, being exposed to something doesn't necessarily mean you know how to regurgitate it. Then, two years ago he attempted a remake of John Carpenter's Halloween...A REMAKE...of Halloween? How can you screw that up? I figured this was a sure hit. It was the worst horror director I've ever seen directing one of the worst horror movies ever made. The pairing of director to script reminded me of the storyline to the musical 'The Producers.' Clearly, the Halloween series is the weakest of our crappy American horror franchises: Years of disconnected plot, and weak acting supported by the mammary glands of Jamie Lee Curtis. Anyone who takes the genre seriously knows Michael Myers is to Horror as Taco Bell is to the American diet. How could you POSSIBLY make it worse? Oh wait, I know: Hire your wife to act, and use the same cast you used in the last two F&*KING movies. THAT'S HOW! Honestly, after I finished watching Zombie's Halloween I was waiting for a news broadcast that he had had the good grace to ritually disembowel himself to make up for it. Of course that didn't happen...The man can't even direct a movie, how the hell would he know how to hold a sword straight? - No, what did happen, was that he decided to do a sequel. The sheer audacity impressed me. I was amazed anyone would get back on the horse again after that disaster. But he did. He made H2, and last night I saw it, and I thought it was GREAT! Not good, but great. Now I'm not going to give away spoilers. If you saw H1 and you're willing to gamble your $10.50 then go ahead. But here's what I thought. The plot FINALLY starts to go somewhere after H1. We get an evolved Laurie, and we get different versions of Michael Myers, which I thought was cool. Zombie has picked up on the fact that a bad guy has different dimensions, and that costume expresses this. VERY GOOD. Also, we touch on moments that subtly imply the supernatural at work. There's good music again. The soundtrack is very, very good. One thing I really respect about Zombie is that he doesn't try to promote his own work in the soundtracks to these films. The soundtracks are another piece of his set to capture the seventies. (Bravo.) Also, the camera perspectives and set design are really superb. If you look at some of Zombie's old art, and compare it to the sets you'll see similarities in the things he captures. Particularly the warped wood look. Overall the world of Zombie's Halloween is something we can really taste. The ending leaves a nice opening for a potentially cool H3. Also, the cast improved their performances from the last film, and you could tell there was A LOT of change that had taken place as a result of H1. Carpenter's Halloweens didn't do this as well. This movie actually makes H1 look cooler because when you see H2 it feels like H1 actually laid out a decent ground work for H2. Unfortunately, I wouldn't say Zombie captured the essence of the Halloween holiday very well, but I think the man was on a limited time budget - so you can't really break his balls over that. Now after all the mean things I've said I'm going to say something else: Go watch this movie. This may very well be Zombie's 'Hellbilly Deluxe' of movies. See it on the big screen. I'm happy I saw it: It makes me feel like Zombie might actually have a fighting chance at making a really good movie one day. As far as it's endurance as a horror movie goes I can't say for sure that I'll still like this movie 5 or 10 years from now, but I can definitely say I'm getting H1 & H2 together on DVD. As far as the music goes I think Tyler Bates did a good job, but not as impressive as 300 or Watchmen. On a side note: Bates is going to have to work very hard to beat Jablonsky's recent score for Bay's 'Friday the 13th.' In fact now that I think of it, Zombie's Halloween has royally beaten the crap out Bay's Friday the 13th. So in closing Rob Zombie's 'Springtime for Hitler' seems to received a second rejuvenating breath. Let's keep our fingers crossed for H3. - Bone

The Haunted iPod (Part 1) The Dance Mixes

Posted by DJBone1031 Aug. 28, 2009 @ 7:39 PM EDT

Hi Guys!

I used to work in a music store and one of the things I was pretty good at was putting together play lists. I could do this easily for most genres, except whenever it came to my favorite holiday-Halloween. There just wasn't enough music out I'd recommend for parties and the little there was was not for sale ( and hard to find without going online). A few years ago I sat down and made a list of the songs that I thought were noteworthy for the Halloween season. That list grew. Below is a part of the list for dance parties or people who want more of a techno-ish take on Halloween themed music.
Now don't let me be misunderstood - If you're looking for Halloween music for parties, and you want music that's pre-made: There ARE musicians who cater to the Halloween season. The two that IMMEDIATELY come to mind are NOX ARCANA and MIDNIGHT SYNDICATE. These are very talented musicians. I highly recommend 'Born of the Night' by Midnight Syndicate, and 'Carnival of Lost Souls' by Nox Arcana. The "Drew's Famous" series is probably not what you're looking for unless you're throwing a Halloween party for children (or unless you're a born-again Christian.). The music below is an assemblage of the more interesting remixes I've heard over the years. I'd highly recommend these if you need music FOR A PARTY.

Halloween Play List 1: The Dance Mixes

Artist - Song

Michael Jackson - Thriller (Richard Grey Full Vocal Club Mix)
Harajuku - Phantom of the Opera (Radio Version)
Jay Atwood - Night On Bald Mountain
Deadmau5 - Clockwork (Jonas Steur Ultra Violence Remix )
Bad Boyz DJ Team - Ghostbusters 04' (Radio Edit)
DeejayRT - Beetlejuice 2.8 (DeejayRT Remix)
G. Tom Mac/Lost Brothers - Cry Little Sister (I Need U Now) [Club Mix]
Apollo 440 - (Don't Fear) The Reaper
DJ Brown - Tales From The Crypt 2003
Bernard Herrmann - Psycho (Crooks & Gunn Remix)
Martinibomb & The Coconut Monkeyrocket - Munster Beat!
m477zorz - Twilight Zone [dirty remix] **
White Zombie - I'm Your Boogie Man (Sex On The Rocks Mix)
Nick Cave & DJ Spooky - Red Right Hand (DJ Spooky Mix)
The Specials - Ghost Town (Prodigy Mix)
Edward Shearmur - The Conjure (Steve Lawler Remix)
Michael Jackson - Thriller (DJ Isaac Radio Edit)
ReignOverhead - Cloverfield Theme Remix **
Blarsa - Grim Grinning Ghosts (Blarsa Mix) **
Max's Mix - Halloween - Theme (Remix) **
DeejayRT - The Exorcist 2.8 (DeejayRT Remix)
Brad Fidel - Fright Night (Peter Dafnous' HIP HOP Remix)
Idina Menzel - Defying Gravity (Tracy Young's Flying Monkey's Club Mix)
Viro The Virus - Monster Mash

** Song can be found on Newgrounds.com - Check My Audio Favorites.

So this is the first list. I'll have others up soon. I've added the NG users on the list to my audio favorites. You can check my favorite audio section to see I added the guys from the list. If anyone else has suggestions for this list - message me and I'll see if it makes the list. - Bone
